TESLA WYE REVIEW

FIRST IMPRESSION OUT OF THE BOX:

The Tesla WYE comes very nicely packaged. It is a two-tier box with the mod sitting on the top tier. The first thing you notice when you pick up the WYE is that it is ridiculously light. I mean feather light. This may be the lightest dual 18650 mod on the market today. It is definitely the lightest dual 18650 mod I own. The texture on it is really smooth as well. On the second tier of the box, you get a high-quality USB cable as well as some paperwork and a well-written manual. That’s it, that is the whole contents of the box.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX:

  • 1 Tesla WYE 200W Mod
  • 1 Micro USB Cable
  • Instructional Manual

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:

The 510 on this box mod has a stainless steel plate with four cutouts for airflow to travel underneath your atomizer. The threading on the 510 connection is pretty good and the plate itself sits flush along the top of the box. Doesn’t look like it is a gold-plated 510. It is probably nickel-plated. It does have a firm spring to it with a medium type of throw to it. I have had no problems with this 510 reading resistances or with any tanks not sitting flush on it. So far, it has been a pleasure to vape with. All of your 25 mm atomizers will fit with absolutely no overhang. The top plate is held in place by two-star screws.

The whole body of the mod looks like it is a 3D-printed mod, however, Tesla has assured me that it is not. It is some sort of combination ABS and polycarbonate material. With the screen facing you on the left side, there is some Tesla branding molded into the side of the mod. Depending on what color you order, the branding will be more or less prominent. On my model, it looks very subtle. My mod is lime green with a zombie splatter on it. I have to say that I really like the feel of the mod and the finish is just fantastic. It looks like it’s going to be a very durable mod despite how light it actually is.

The battery door is held into place with tabs that click into the battery tray. I have seen other versions of this mod that have a slightly different battery door. Those versions had a magnetic battery door, mine does not. Since my model was acquired after the World Vapor Expo in Miami, I am going to assume that I have the latest version. So I believe that the door that I have on my mod is the one that Tesla is going to use going forward. The nice thing about the battery door is you can put it on either way and it will fit. The proper way to have it on though is with the venting holes of the battery door towards the top of the mod. The battery door is made out of the same material as the rest of the mod. It is a very light plastic with a nice flex to it.

The battery tray is made out of the same exact materials as the rest of the mod, too. It is held in place by four Phillips head screws that are deeply embedded into the tray itself. The bottom contacts on the battery tray are gold plated and button style. The top contacts are also gold plated but they are spring loaded. There is no battery strap, but to be honest, you really don’t need one because this battery tray is extremely well designed. There is plenty of room on the sides of the tray to grasp your batteries and pull them out. Getting my batteries in and out of the WYE mod has never been an issue. I have experienced absolutely no battery rattle and when you do snap the battery door into place, it gives off a very satisfying click. My one worry about this type of battery door is that since it is plastic rubbing against plastic, sooner or later, those tabs are going to wear down. So far, it has not been an issue but I can see it being one in the future. I would have liked to have seen the tabs on the door backed up by some magnets from a longevity standpoint.

Along the front of the WYE, we have an oversized fire button that is circular in shape. It is made out of the same exact material as the rest of the mod and it does match rather nicely. It does look like it belongs on the mod as it is not too big and not too small. I think the size of the firing button for the WYE is just right. It is very easy to find and it has a clicky tactile feel to it that is very responsive. It does have a slightly convex shape to it which makes using it a real pleasure.

Right below the firing button, we do have the screen of the WYE. Information included on the screen is the resistance, voltage, wattage, preheat, material, battery meter, battery percentage, and memory slot. The screen is laid out very nicely but the font is a little on the blocky side. The font is also on the small side so sometimes, in order to see certain things on the screen, you do have to look closely. While it’s not the best screen out on the market today, it’s definitely not the worst either. As a matter of fact, at this price point, it is to be expected. It does do well in all lighting conditions including outdoors.

Right below the screen, we do have the plus and minus buttons. It is one rocker style button with an oval shape to it at the end. The plus button is on the right and the minus button is on the left. They are not clearly marked but they do have a nice, clicky, tactile feel to them. This mod does scroll in half-watt increments and it does scroll very fast. Right below the plus-minus button, we have the charge update port. This mod is firmware upgradeable. I have not been able to confirm at how many amps this mod charges at. For the purposes of this review, I’ll assume that it’s at 1 amp. If it was 2 amps, then they probably would have listed it as a feature.

On the both sides of the screen, we do have some board venting. There are four cyclops-shaped slots that seem to have some type of mesh or screening behind them. It is a really nice touch and it definitely breaks up the mod as far as aesthetics go. On the bottom of the mod, there is some Tesla branding as well as two-star screws that hold the bottom plate in place.

Tesla WYE Review

I have to say that I am really very impressed with the weight, finish, and texture of this mod. It is extremely well done. It is so light for a dual 18650 mod that it is actually a pleasure to carry around. Whenever I go out, I always find myself grabbing this mod first. Mainly because I get the benefit of a dual 18650 mod without the hassle of having some big clunky thing to keep in my pocket. Very well done Tesla. I know a lot of people are going to say that it looks a lot like the Boxer mod by Ginger Vaper. Yes, it absolutely does, but who really cares? All of these mods, all look alike in their respective subcategories. Ginger Vaper doesn’t have a lock on this form factor. Not only that but with the Tesla WYE mod, you can get that same type of look at a substantial discount. This mod is nowhere near the price of the Boxer mod yet it has a very similar look. If we are comparing looks, you could also say that it looks very similar to the Asmodus Minikin V2. It just happens to be a hair bigger. The point is, at some point in time, all of these mods start to look the same. So for me, personally, it is really not an issue.

THE LOOK, FEEL, AND GENERAL AESTHETICS OF THE MOD:

I have to say that I really enjoyed the time that I spent with the Tesla WYE. It is an absolutely awesome form factor in an extremely light package. This is one pocketable mod. I have found myself using this mod a lot when I step out of the house. I really like the fact that I can have dual 18650 power in an extremely lightweight package. I love the finish on the WYE mod. The texture of it is has a light rubbery feel that is almost like a Vapor Shark mod. It doesn’t have quite as rubbery feel as that type of finish but it is definitely close. It feels great in the hand and so far, I have had this mod for a month or so and the color and finish look exactly like it did when I took it out of the box. Just a fantastic form factor with an outstanding finish. Tesla says that the mod is actually made out of an ABS and Polycarbonate blend that is heat resistant.

THE BOARD:

The Tesla WYE uses a proprietary board by Tesla. This board is supposed to be capable of 200 watts and it has a temperature range of 200 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. It does have a minimum resistance of .1 ohms. Of course, there is a full temperature control suite and it will TC and Ni, Ti, and SS. It also has three memory slots for those of you who use the TCR settings. There is also three preheat settings that are soft, medium, and hard. There is also a curve feature available in power mode only. The preheat settings work very and I do find myself using them a lot in most situations. I’m not a big wattage curve guy but I did test it and it does work well.

THE MENU SYSTEM:

  • Click the fire button 5 times to turn the mod on and off
  • Hold down the minus button with the fire button to lock the keys
  • Click the fire button three times to have access to all the settings
  • Once you have access, use the +/- to scroll through the settings
  • Once you find the setting you want to adjust, click the fire button to select that setting.
  • Once you select the setting, you want to adjust use the plus minus button to make adjustments

This is an extremely simple and very intuitive menu system. You can literally sit down with this mod for 2 minutes and figure it out without looking at the instruction booklet. The menu system on the WYE is just extremely well done and very user-friendly.

HOW DOES IT VAPE:

This is a really nice mod and to be honest, I have no idea why it’s not getting the love it should get in the vaping community. It is super light and it works like a champ. It is very accurate in power mode up to about 160 watts. I mean, let’s face it, when we see a dual 18650 mod claiming 200 watts, most of us know that is just not going to happen. I vaped it next to my Lost Vape Triade with my Smok TFV12 tank and I had a 200 watt coil installed. There is no way this thing is cranking out 200 watts. I say 160 watts, tops. I just wish companies would be honest about that. Believe me Tesla, the educated vapers know.

TC mode is definitely okay. It’s not the greatest when it comes to temperature control vaping but I have to say that I’ve had a lot worse. It’s definitely better than any Smok mod I have ever used when it comes to TC. One thing’s for sure, the little bit of sacrifice that you have to put up with in TC mode when compared to the look, feel, fit, and finish is absolutely fine to me, especially at this price point. I think this not being the greatest TC mod of all is definitely worth that sacrifice when you weigh in the the pros of this mod. I find myself carrying this mod all of the time. I just like the way it vapes and I love the form factor coupled with the feather-like weight of this mod. If you find a small tank that you really enjoy and you put it on top of this mod, you will have one very light dual 18650 setup.

WHAT WOULD MAKE IT BETTER:

  • TC could have been tweaked
  • Centered 510 connection

If you have gotten this far in this review, I’m sure you have realized that I don’t think there is a lot wrong with the Tesla WYE. Aside from the TC not being the greatest, it is a great performing mod at a great price point. Who knows? Maybe Tesla will tweak the TC with an update. If they did, that that would be a huge win. The only other thing that I think could have made this mod better is if Tesla would have went ahead and centered the 510. I think on a mod with this type of form factor and its extreme lightness, it would have benefited greatly from a centered 510. If they did that, it would have been absolutely awesome. Other than that, the Tesla WYE really doesn’t give its user a lot to complain about.

CONCLUSION:

If you are looking for an all-day carry mod that you can slap dual 18650 batteries into, then you don’t need to look any further. The Tesla WYE is your ticket. Not only is this mod extremely light for its form factor but it also has a really nice finish. You will love holding this mod in your hand. It really does feel that good. It definitely got some good performance to it and I do find myself using it quite often. To be honest, I probably should have retired this mod weeks ago with all the new stuff that I have coming in. I do have mods that vape just as well, if not better, yet I am still using my WYE. I can’t seem to bring myself to retire it because I just love the lightness of it. It is a mod that I use on a daily basis and that I carry around with me when I am commuting. So, if that’s the type of mod that you were looking for, then the Tesla WYE is DeucesJack approved. Go get yourself one and lighten up your vape load.
